Why We LOVE
Merino Wool
Merino sheep produce fine,
soft fleece. It has many advantages over other kinds of wool.
Softness
The fibers of Merino sheep wool are extremely fine, giving it a very soft texture. The softness makes Merino wool well suited for clothing items as well as blankets because it will not irritate or itch the skin. .
Absorbency
Because merino wool is so soft, it is also absorbent. This benefits clothing manufacturers, as it makes the wool easy to tint or dye. It is also easy to chemically treat Merino wool to make it washable.
Breathability
Merino wool is able to retain warmth, making it a good material for coats, sweaters and blankets; however, the fineness of Merino wool also makes it breathable. Because it is breathable, heat from the wearer will not become completely trapped, causing overheating.
Animal Adaptability
Some types of sheep have particular needs, in terms of climate, forage and geography. Merino sheep, however, are adaptable to a wide variety of environments and are adept foragers. The sheep can therefore be bred and raised in many places around the world. Merino sheep can also live up to 15 years and one sheep can produce up to 18 pounds of wool per shearing.

Jason Overland has been a merchant for "a long time now", according to our records. He worked for about 9 years at Scheels, starting out in the West Acres store and ending up in the corporate office as a buyer. He left Scheels to work at Microsoft and was there until 2007, when he left to spend his time downtown at Beyond Running full time.
When Jason's not at Beyond Running or Outermost Layer, you'll likely catch him making store fixtures from scratch using his fancy wood working tools, researching the next appliance he is going to purchase, running, or "pumping iron" at the gym (which he completes at least semi-annually). He enjoys fishing, napping, and social justice, in that order.
Our Story
We are Jason Overland and Sally Loeffler. We've owned and operated Beyond Running, a running specialty store in downtown Fargo, since 2007. The idea for Outermost Layer came out of inspiration for our love of retail, cool stuff, and keeping busy. We vowed that our next venture would be a store that represented the cool stuff we love the most, including the things we like to wear when we are not running.
So, people always ask us "What kind of store is this?" And the answer is... not easily classifiable. The best way to describe it, if we had to, is probably "urban outdoor lifestyle". You'll understand what we mean when you stop in to visit. We work hard to have the coolest and most unique apparel, footwear and accessories in town. We're always looking for new products. So don't be shy about telling us what you'd like to see on our shelves!

Sally Loeffler has been wreaking havoc on dowtown Fargo for a few years now. Although she is a speech pathologist by trade, she tries her hand at retail with Beyond Running and Outermost Layer. Her hobbies include running, drawing, making lists, exaggerating, telling stories and making up new lyrics to exisitng songs. She drives a classic Malibu, affectionately named the Salibu. You'll recognize it by the custom cracked bumper. She recently discovered a love for painting monsters and robots, which can be seen on the walls of OML.
If we wouldn't wear it, we wouldn't sell it. We strive to provide you with the coolest product lines... from apparel, outerwear, socks, shoes, accessories and more, we are always looking for the best. Quality, affordability and the cool factor-that's what drives our brand selection. If there's something you love that you don't see and you think we should have, let us know! As long as it's not about quantum physics, philosophy, Medicare Part D, or Michael Landon's years on the series "Highway to Heaven". Cause we have to draw the line somewhere.
One of the brands we're really drooling over this fall is Arc'teryx. Why? We happen to think it is some of the most beautiful, functional, and technically amazing brands out there. Named for ARCHAEOPTERYX LITHOGRAPHICA, the first reptile to develop the feather for flight, freeing itself from the constraints of the horizontal world.
Arcteryx's central purpose is to build the finest products possible.
The Arcteryx advantage is achieved by merging unrivaled designs with the best quality, highest performing materials and assembling them in the most innovative and most durable manner for the intended use.
Design and Product Integrity
Arc'teryx is a Canadian company, and all of our product design, R&D, and production development is done in-house at our head office in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. We are unusual in the outdoor softgoods industry; we choose to design, perform our own patternmaking and develop all of our products in-house, and we have our own 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Vancouver. This allows us to readily explore unorthodox design concepts and gives us complete control over the development of new products. As more North American brands move their design and production overseas, Arc'teryx remains a member of an ever-shrinking group of manufacturers that employs a full complement of vertically-capable in-house designers and product developers.
Arc'teryx is one of only a few major outdoor industry outerwear brands in North America to have its own domestic North American manufacturing facility, and we proudly employ highly skilled workers in our Vancouver, Canada factory. Our factory is only ten minutes from our design studios, which allows us to test proprietary production techniques and fully develop and commercialize our innovative products. Major brands often use outside design contractors, and usually conduct product development through independent manufacturing facilities. We prefer to have control at every stage of our products' design and development.
We also have product assembled in eight other countries around the world by high quality, experienced manufacturers. We have one quality standard and it applies to all of our products regardless of location of manufacture. We do not make substitutions or alterations to our products based on manufacturing location or facility. Arc'teryx refuses to compromise quality or performance for any reason, and all of our products are backed by a lifetime warranty.
Design Philosophy
We adhere to these simple rules:
Design: our dedicated in-house R&D team designs, tests and oversees the development of our products. Patterns are finalized and graded in Canada and the same patterns are used in all manufacturing facilities.
Materials: our in-house design and development teams carefully select all of our materials and components. Our philosophy has always been to source the best quality materials available globally. We consistently use the same materials and components in every factory; material substitutions are not permitted.
Construction: all products are constructed precisely as designed, using our advanced construction techniquesThermoforming, Lamination, Micro Seams, TinyTape, etc.
Quality Control: our quality standards are the highest in the industry. Every product produced at every factory must pass the same rigid standards. Our QC processes are conducted on-site to encourage accountability, and a global QC Manager in our Vancouver head office oversees all of our QC processes worldwide.
